For Brendi and Carlo’s engagement session, we headed to EZ Self Service Car Wash in Old Bridge, New Jersey for a playful car wash photoshoot that felt completely like them. With buckets, sponges, plenty of soap, and a car that already meant something to them, we turned an ordinary car wash into one of my favorite engagement sessions.

Brendi, Carlo, and I had actually been following each other online for a while before we ever met in person. When we finally met at a styled shoot, we immediately clicked. These two are always willing to go along with my slightly unconventional photo ideas, whether that’s taking photos at Dave & Buster’s, walking around Somerville in alien masks, or, in this case, turning a self-service car wash into an engagement photo location.
As their wedding approached, Brendi told me they were planning to skip traditional table numbers. Instead, each table would be represented by a photo from one of the different sessions they had done together. She still needed a photo for a table filled with Carlo’s friends, who all share his love for cars. After seeing similar car wash engagement photos on Pinterest, she realized it would be perfect.
And honestly, it couldn’t have fit them better.
Making Their Car Wash Engagement Photos Feel Personal
Before the session, I grabbed buckets, sponges, towels, and a few other car-washing supplies that we could incorporate into the photos. Not only did they give us something to actually do during the session, but they made the photos feel playful rather than overly posed.
And yes, we actually cleaned the car.
Carlo’s car was basically his first love before Brendi came along, which made the location even more fitting for them. Instead of choosing an engagement photo location simply because it was pretty, we created a session around something that was already part of their story.

It doesn’t necessarily need to be expensive or picture-perfect — it just needs to fit the story you’re trying to tell.
Keep Your Outfits Casual
A car wash engagement session naturally has a casual, nostalgic feel, so I wouldn’t overcomplicate the outfits.
Think denim shorts, simple T-shirts or tanks, khaki shorts, sneakers, or other pieces that feel relaxed. Since the car wash itself already gives us plenty of visual interest, simpler outfits keep the photos from feeling too busy.
And remember: you will probably get wet. Bringing a second outfit or change of clothes for the ride home isn’t a bad idea.
Bring Car Wash Supplies
Props work best when they’re actually part of what you’re doing rather than something you’re awkwardly holding for a photo.
For a car wash engagement session, consider bringing:

- Microfiber towels or rags
- Car-safe soap
- Large towels
- A change of clothes
Then actually wash the car, splash each other, make a mess, and have fun with it.
The candid moments that happen while you’re doing something together are often better than anything we could perfectly pose.
