That variety is part of what makes Oahu engagement photos so special. You don’t necessarily have to choose between the mountains, beach, or greenery; your engagement session can become an entire afternoon of exploring the island together.
I’m Taylor, a New Jersey-based wedding and engagement photographer who travels for destination weddings and sessions. While visiting my sister in Hawaii, I knew I couldn’t leave Oahu without photographing a couple somewhere on the island.
That’s when I stumbled into Beth and Chad.

When we started planning, I told them I wanted to spend the day exploring Oahu through places that felt local and special to them rather than showing up with a list of picture-perfect locations. So we hopped in the car and spent the next four or five hours driving around the island, stopping at beaches, tropical landscapes, and quiet spots along the way. We even planned to stop at one of their favorite shaved ice spots, only to find out it was closed.
Beth and Chad love hiking, exploring, and spending time near the water, so the whole day felt completely natural to them. Instead of moving from one predetermined photo spot to another, we explored, changed plans, and let the photos happen along the way, which is exactly what I wanted their Oahu engagement session to feel like.
The Best Locations for Engagement Photos on Oahu
After spending hours driving around and photographing different parts of Oahu, one of my biggest takeaways was that you really don’t need to search for one single “perfect” engagement photo location.
Beauty is everywhere here.
The better question is: what do you want your Oahu engagement photos to feel like?
Do you picture yourselves barefoot in the ocean? Running through an open field with mountains behind you? Exploring somewhere surrounded by tropical greenery? Or spending the afternoon hopping between completely different landscapes?
Here are some of the areas and locations I’d consider when planning an engagement session on Oahu.
North Shore
The North Shore of Oahu spans a 17-mile stretch of coastline between Ka’ena Point and Kahuku Point, home to fifty-one beaches stretching over 11 miles. Known globally for world-class surfing and snorkeling, the North Shore offers a perfect mix of adventure and tranquility for engagement photos, powerful waves, dramatic sandy shores, and that unmistakable golden Hawaii light. This is consistently one of my favorite spots on the entire island for couples sessions.
The coastline gives you beaches, palms, surf, rocky shoreline, and beautiful evening light, while the surrounding area gives you plenty of opportunities to stop and explore along the way.
It’s especially well suited for couples who want their session to feel adventurous and relaxed rather than overly formal.
Conditions on the North Shore can change significantly depending on the season, so I’d plan the exact location around the time of year, weather, surf conditions, and sunset rather than choosing a beach solely because you’ve seen a beautiful photo of it online.
Malaekahana Beach
Tucked between the towns of La’ie and Kahuku, Malaekahana Beach is one of the North Shore’s lesser-known treasures. Its relative seclusion makes it ideal for couples who want a more intimate, private feeling to their photos. The gentle swimming conditions and the view of Goat Island just offshore create a genuinely magical backdrop, and the soft sand paired with the rustic charm of the nearby beach cabins gives every image a cozy, romantic atmosphere.
The open beach and surrounding greenery give us plenty of room for movement, walking along the water, sitting together in the sand, running along the shoreline, or simply letting the session unfold.
It’s a great option if you want beautiful Oahu beach engagement photos without necessarily choosing one of the island’s most recognizable locations.
Laie Trail & Falls
For couples who want to add a sense of adventure to their session, Laie Trail & Falls, in the peaceful village of La’ie is one of the best choices on the island. The trail leads to a 15-foot waterfall where couples can take a refreshing dip surrounded by lush greenery and the sound of flowing water. The area also carries real cultural and historic significance, which adds a layer of meaning to the experience beyond just the visuals.
For couples who genuinely love hiking and exploring, incorporating a trail into your engagement session can make the experience feel much more personal than simply arriving somewhere, taking photos, and leaving.
If you’re planning around a specific trail or waterfall, I’d always check current trail conditions, weather, access, and photography restrictions beforehand.
Waimea Valley
Waimea Valley, situated across from Waimea Bay, is a botanical paradise rich in Hawaiian history and cultural sites. The valley boasts over 5,000 botanical species along a paved path leading to a stunning 45-foot waterfall. The expansive gardens, with their vibrant flowers, offer a variety of beautiful spots for engagement photos.
The presence of cultural practitioners and artisans along the way adds an authentic Hawaiian touch, making your photos truly unique and memorable.
For couples drawn to tropical greenery, Waimea Valley gives you an entirely different backdrop from Oahu’s beaches.
The botanical landscape, towering trees, tropical plants, and surrounding scenery can give your engagement photos a lush, almost cinematic quality.

Turtle Beach
Turtle Beach, near Kahuku Point, marks the entrance to the North Shore and is famous for its frequent turtle sightings. Although the swimming conditions here aren’t ideal due to currents and rocky nearshore waters, the beach’s natural beauty and the chance to see turtles up close make it a fantastic location to capture this exciting time in your life.
The turtles’ presence adds a magical and whimsical element to your photos, symbolizing good luck and longevity in your relationship.
Makapu‘u Point
Makapu‘u Point, offers some of the most dramatic, sweeping views on the island, Oahu’s southeastern coastline, Koko Head, and Koko Crater all visible from the trail. The historic red-roofed Makapu’u Lighthouse serves as a striking focal point, and during the winter months you may even catch migrating humpback whales offshore. The rugged cliffs and panoramic ocean views make this one of the most dramatic, editorial-feeling locations for engagement photos on Oahu.
The cliffs, ocean, and surrounding landscape make this a beautiful option for couples who want their engagement photos to have a more adventurous or editorial feeling.
Because the landscape is exposed, I’d pay close attention to wind, weather, crowds, hiking time, and the direction of the light when deciding to go here.
Kualoa Ranch & Kualoa Regional Park
Famous for its appearances in major films, Kualoa Ranch offers some of the most jaw-dropping mountain backdrops on the island, dramatic green ridgelines that look almost otherworldly. Kualoa Regional Park nearby gives you a more relaxed, beach-meets-mountain setting, with the same incredible ridgeline views from a coastal vantage point.
Kualoa Regional Park gives you the opportunity to combine mountain scenery with the coast, making it especially beautiful if you can’t decide whether you want mountains or water in your engagement photos.
Heʻeia State Park & Hoʻomaluhia Botanical Garden
For couples who want lush, jungle-like greenery without a long hike, both of these spots on the windward side of the island offer rich, layered backdrops with mountains rising behind botanical landscapes. Hoʻomaluhia in particular is one of the most peaceful, garden-like settings on Oahu, beautiful for couples who want a softer, more romantic feel to their images.
It’s especially useful when planning a multi-location engagement session because there are several completely different landscapes within this part of the island.
Rather than trying to drive from one side of Oahu to the other, we can choose locations that naturally work together and spend more time actually enjoying them.
Moliʻi Dock & Secret Island
A quiet dock setting near Kualoa with calm water and a relaxed, secluded feel, one of the most underrated spots for genuinely candid, intimate portraits. The stillness of the water and the soft light here create some of the most romantic images from an Oahu session.
Quiet waterfront locations can create a completely different feeling from the island’s open beaches, calmer, more intimate, and perfect for candid photos together.
Some locations in this area, including private docks and Secret Island, have controlled access.
Planning Your Oahu Engagement Session: What to Know
Plan around the light. Hawaii’s golden hour is extraordinary, but the island’s diverse terrain means the light behaves differently depending on where you are, open beaches versus jungle trails versus garden paths. A good Oahu photographer will help you sequence your locations so you are getting the best light at each stop throughout your session.
Build in travel time. Oahu is a relatively small island, but driving times between locations can add up, especially around the North Shore. A multi-location session like Beth and Chad’s typically runs four to six hours once you factor in driving, changing outfits, and the actual shooting time at each spot.
Choose locations that reflect you, not just what is popular. The North Shore is beautiful, but so is a quiet botanical garden or a hidden waterfall trail. Think about what kind of couple you are adventurous and active, or quiet and intimate, and let that guide which locations you prioritize.
Respect the land. Many of these locations carry deep cultural and historical significance to the Hawaiian people. Stay on marked trails, do not disturb plant life or wildlife, and always check current access rules before visiting, as some locations have seasonal restrictions or require permits for larger groups.
Bring a change of outfits. Given the range of terrain, beach, jungle, garden, cliffside, many couples bring two or three outfit options to match the different environments throughout the session.
What Does an Oahu Engagement Session Actually Feel Like?
For me, the best engagement sessions feel less like a photoshoot and more like spending a few hours together somewhere you genuinely want to be.
I’ll guide you when you need it, especially when it comes to finding good light, creating natural movement, or figuring out what to do when suddenly you’re very aware that there’s a camera pointed at you.
But I don’t want every photograph to come from a perfectly constructed pose.
I want the wind. the wet clothes after deciding to get into the ocean. The laughing between locations. The stop for shaved ice that may or may not actually be open.
And all of the little things that happen when you stop worrying about creating the perfect engagement photos and actually enjoy the experience together.
Beth and Chad’s session is such a good example of that.
We had some of the most beautiful scenery in Hawaii surrounding us, but when I look back at their photos, they’re still the most important part of every image.
