Most people think eloping in NYC means one thing: City Hall, a quick ceremony and you’re out. And don’t worry, that’s totally an option (more on that below!). But this city has so many more spots than that. You’ve got iconic, postcard-famous locations like Central Park or Top of the Rock. And you’ve got non-conventional, tucked-away spots like a converted chapel or a private art loft in Brooklyn.

NYC has range and that’s what makes it such a good elopement city no matter what your vibe is.

So let’s get into it. Here’s your guide to the best places to elope in NYC, plus the legal stuff you’ll actually need to know.

Iconic NYC Elopement Spots

These are the locations that make people say “OMG, you got married THERE?”

Central Park is the classic choice, and for good reason. There are a handful of ceremony spots scattered throughout the park, including Wagner Cove, which is a small, rustic shelter with two wooden benches, tucked on the edge of The Lake and it feels private even though you’re in the middle of Manhattan. If your group is under 20 people, you don’t technically need a permit here. But since it’s such a popular spot, I always recommend getting one anyway (it’s only $25 through NYC Parks) so you’re not sharing your ceremony with another couple. Keep in mind, pricing and details here are subject to change, so make sure you get the most up-to-date information from NYC Parks!

Brooklyn Bridge is iconic for the NYC skyline view never misses. You can take photos on the bridge itself or in Brooklyn Bridge Park without a permit, as long as your group is small and your photographer (maybe me?!) is shooting handheld. Just know it’s rarely empty, so if you want it more to yourselves, we’ll want to go early!

The Empire State Building is another iconic pick, especially if you love the idea of getting engaged or celebrating from up high. Make sure your partner isn’t afraid of heights, though! They have an official package for proposals up on the 86th floor Observation Deck if you’re still in that stage, and the views alone make it worth a stop on your elopement day, even if the ceremony happens elsewhere.

The New York Public Library is stunning from the outside and overlooks Fifth Avenue, with the back of the building opening directly to Bryant Park. Formal photography inside the building is only allowed if you’re renting the space for a private event, so plan your library moment as an outdoor stop rather than an indoor ceremony spot.

The Met is one of those “iconic NYC” boxes people want to check, and totally understandably so! Just know that staged wedding photography isn’t officially allowed inside, so this one is more about sneaking in a candid moment as visitors (regular non-flash photos are fine) than building your whole shot list around it.

Non-Conventional NYC Elopement Spots

This is where NYC really gets to show off.

Sure Thing Chapel NYC is a playful, ‘omg are we in Vegas?!’ option on the Lower East Side. It’s got the same fun, no-pressure energy as its Vegas sister location. If you want your elopement to feel like a celebration instead of something serious and stiff, this is a great spot to check out. With 25 guests maximum for this venue, it’s absolutely perfect for those fun elopement vibes.

The Artist Loft in Williamsburg is one of my favorite hidden gems. It’s a private, art-filled space with an indoor garden, and it’s been a home base for New York artists since 1989. It books directly through Eloping is Fun, and it’s an authentic, only-in-Brooklyn kind of backdrop. One small note: there are resident cats, so keep that in mind if allergies are a concern for anyone in your group.

6BC Botanical Garden is a hidden community garden in the East Village that most people walk right past without knowing it’s there! It’s lush, private and totally different from the big park energy of the infamous Central Park. You’ll need to reserve it in advance for your ceremony, so make sure to plan ahead!

The TWA Hotel at JFK is such a fun, unexpected choice if you’re into retro glam. Talk about a throwback! It’s the restored 1962 TWA Flight Center and it has genuinely gorgeous event spaces built for celebrating. If you’re flying in and out anyway, getting married surrounded by mid-century design before you catch your flight is such a cool way to do it!

The Legal Side of Eloping in NYC

No matter which spot speaks to you, here’s what’s non-negotiable if you want it to be official in NYC.

You’ll need a New York marriage license, which costs $35 (again, check any updated pricing from the NYC clerk) and comes from the NYC City Clerk. Appointments are required (no walk-ins allowed), and they’re booked through the city’s Project Cupid system, usually released about three weeks out. Once you have your license, New York State requires a 24-hour waiting period before your ceremony can legally happen, so build that into your timeline. The license is valid for 60 days after that.

If you’d rather skip finding your own officiant altogether, the Manhattan Marriage Bureau (141 Worth Street) will marry you right there for an extra $25 (make sure to double check pricing with them!) It’s simple, it’s fast and you walk out with your marriage certificate that same day. It’s honestly a totally underrated elopement option on its own!

If you love the idea of a big, bold, iconic backdrop, NYC has it. If you’re more drawn to something quiet, quirky and off the beaten path, NYC has that too. That’s the whole point of eloping in NYC: this city is big enough to be exactly what you want it to be on your wedding day, whether that’s Central Park at sunrise or a Brooklyn art loft with a cat wandering through your ceremony.
